What is Dual Pool Mining and How Is It Different From Fallback?

You open your miner's Stratum settings. You see a Pool Mode dropdown: Single Pool, Dual Pool, Fallback. Which one do you pick? Here's the honest breakdown — one miner to another, no hype.

What Is Dual Pool?

Dual Pool splits one miner's hashrate across two pools at the same time, by percentage. Set it to 50/50 and half your hashrate works on Pool 1 while the other half works on Pool 2 — both running simultaneously, not one after the other.

Why Use It?

  • Spread your risk. If one pool goes down, the other half of your hashrate keeps running. You're never fully offline.
  • Two shots at once. Point one half at BTC and the other at BCH — two jackpot tickets instead of betting everything on one coin.
  • Your ratio, your call. 50/50, 70/30 — whatever fits your strategy.
Dual Pool does NOT increase your expected earnings. Your hashrate earns the same over time no matter which pool it points to. It's a tool for spreading risk, not a magic trick for bigger returns. Splitting doesn't give you more lottery tickets — it just spreads the same tickets across two draws.

Dual Pool vs Fallback — What's the Difference?

This is where most people get confused. One line to sort it out:

  • Fallback = only ONE pool runs at a time. The backup kicks in only when the main pool drops.
  • Dual Pool = TWO pools run at the same time, hashrate split by percentage.
Fallback Dual Pool
Pools running at once 1 (backup on standby) 2 (both at the same time)
When backup activates Only if main pool drops Nothing “activates” — always running
Your hashrate 100% on one pool Split by % (e.g. 50/50)
Main purpose Stay online (uptime) Spread risk / mine two coins
Think of it this way: Fallback is a backup driver — he only steps in when the main driver is sick, and sits on the bench otherwise. Dual Pool is two drivers running two cars at once — both going at the same time, both with a chance.
Quick example — one 12TH miner:

▸ Fallback: All 12TH mines BCH. Pool dies → whole miner auto-switches to backup, keeps mining BCH. Only ever mining one coin.

▸ Dual Pool (50/50): 6TH mines BTC + 6TH mines BCH. Both coins running at the same time.
It's one or the other — they don't stack. Once Pool Mode is set to Dual Pool, you only get Pool 1 and Pool 2 tabs. You can't add a fallback inside Dual Pool. Want auto-switch on a single coin? Use Fallback. Want to spread across two coins? Use Dual Pool.
